This antique is an authentic hand crafted item by a local Sindhi Muslim woman (whose community is originally migrant from Pakistan), in the Thar Desert region (Rajasthan, India). This purse is made with the traditional Sindhi metallic embroidery Mukka, which uses gold and silver threads hand-worked with delicacy and minuteness.

Ethnic styles express lifestyle. They are practiced by individuals whose heritage is rooted in community rather than land, and considered cultural property.

  • CRAFT TECHNIQUE: Sindhi Muslim - Mukka

MUKKE KA KAAM, one of the Sindhi Muslim embroidery techniques, uses extensively the gold and silver threads to make the fabrics even more attractive. Mukke is the local name for "metallic gold" or "silver thread" that is wound around a core of cotton fabric. The Mukka metallic embroidery tradition is intimately bound up with Sindhi Muslim traditions of marriage and dowry. Each bride is required to bring with her seven or eight embroidered dresses, a range of accouterments, plus several quilts.
