One handmade Lakh Choodee (lac bangle) with a minute and precise Haathee (elephant) theme, hand-painted by the Lakhera community in Rajasthan (India). Lac bangles are of bright colours and Rajasthani people believe they bring good premonition to those who wear them!

Ethnic styles express lifestyle. They are practiced by individuals whose heritage is rooted in community rather than land, and considered cultural property.

  • CRAFT TECHNIQUE: Lac Jewellery

THE LAKHERA get their name from the Sanskrit Laksha Kuru meaning a worker in lac.

LAC is a natural resin from the Laksha Taru (the Lac tree). The craft was initially developed by tribal people of Rajasthan and is now a furor in urban India. In Hindu mythology Lac is considered to be sacred as it indicates symbol of Suhaag (woman having her husband alive) in married life.

RAJASTHANI CELEBRATIONS can be identified with a distinct style of bangle design.

BANGLES are always used in pairs, one in each arm. Women usually carry more than one pair of bangles, to which they add other pairs of other styles, but always an even number.
