There was a time when playing with handcrafted toys was a joy of a very regular kind... Decorate your home with these cotton handmade Chidiya (bird) or let your little kids be cuddly with these toys, hand-embroidered with the cross-stitched Jat style unique to Kutch (Gujarat, India), by artisans from ethnic communities of the Kutch region in Gujarat (India) along with Kala Raksha organisation.

Ethnic styles express lifestyle. They are practiced by individuals whose heritage is rooted in community rather than land, and considered cultural property.

  • CRAFT TECHNIQUE: Kutch Embroidery (Jat)

JAT embroidery "belongs" specifically to the Garasia Jats, Islamic pastoralists who came from outside of Kutch region. Garasia women stitch an array of geometric patterns in counted work based on cross stitch studded with minute mirrors to completely fill the yokes of their churi, a long gown. This style, displaying comprehension of the structure of fabric, is unique in Kutch and Sindh (Pakistan).

KALA RAKSHA is a grassroots social enterprise committed to documenting and promoting existing traditions of art and craft of Kutch region in north Gujarat, India. The Trust maintains a collection of heirloom textiles that functions as a resource base for artisans to study and create exquisite contemporary work.
