Shoulder bag inspired in the Batuwo (purse) with the hand-embroidery techniques Suf (in one side) and Kharek (on the other side) - typical from the ethnic groups of Kutch region in Gujarat (India) - made by artisans from Kala Raksha organisation. The traditional Batuwo is made by the bride for the future groom, sent between the engagement and the wedding in exchange of ornaments filled with supari (betel nut), etc. In the wedding the groom wears it with a small dagger.

Ethnic styles express lifestyle. They are practiced by individuals whose heritage is rooted in community rather than land, and considered cultural property.

  • CRAFT TECHNIQUE: Kutch Embroidery (Suf & Khaarek)

BATUWO is a traditional purse made by the bride for the future groom, sent between the engagement and the wedding in exchange of ornaments filled with supari (betel nut), etc. In the wedding the groom wears it with a small dagger.

SUF is a painstaking embroidery based on the triangle, called "Suf". Suf is counted on the warp and weft of the cloth in a surface satin stitch worked from the back. Motifs are never drawn: each artisan imagines her design and then counts it out in reverse!

KHAREKK is a geometric style, counted and precise. In this style, the artisan works out the structure of geometric patterns with an outline of black squares, then fills in the spaces with bands of satin stitching that are worked along warp and weft from the front.

KALA RAKSHA is a grassroots social enterprise committed to documenting and promoting existing traditions of art and craft of Kutch region in north Gujarat, India. The Trust maintains a collection of heirloom textiles that functions as a resource base for artisans to study and create exquisite contemporary work.
